In academia, communication plays an enormously important role. The success of research proposals, applications, calls for papers and, of course, publishing heavily depend on efficient and effective communi­cation.

The motto ‘publish or perish’ dates back to the late 19th or early 20th century, depending on the source. Originally it was a call to publish academic findings, in a time when findings often were not published. What guided the idea was that if something was worth re­searching it should be made available to others. Since then that motto has gained such momentum that it has become⎯sometimes vehemently⎯disputed. And yet, it prevails.

Given the continuing dynamics in science, it is crucial that your contributions manage to catch and hold your potential audience’s attention.
